Kevin Bouchard-Hall's 5 Rasputitsa Tips

We touched base with the 2018 Rasputitsa winner, member of Velocio Northeast, and Zwift aficionado, Kevin Bouchard-Hall and tapped his wealth of racing knowledge for these 5 tips.

Going the distance- It is a 2-4 hour ride for most people so the first goal should be to be able to ride that total amount of time.  Build slowly each week to hit that 4 hour ride time.

  1. Going the distance- It is a 2-4 hour ride for most people so the first goal should be to be able to ride that total amount of time.  Build slowly each week to hit that 4 hour ride time.

  2. Going hard how it’s hard - The hardest efforts in the race are on the climbs and they are all in the 5-10 min range.  So intensity at that duration is something to practice.

  3. Right tool for the job - For me it is making sure you have the right tires and gearing.  In most cases a 32-40cc file tread is the right tire. But that can change based on the conditions and course.  There will be lots of tire talk the week before the race on social media. For gearing, you want to have a 1:1 ratio so you have enough gear for the steep climbs.

  4. The Unexpected - There will probably be some running and perhaps some gnarly riding.  Weekly jogs and playing bikes in the snow is a good prep.

  5. Appetite for adventure - Having a positive mindset ready to take on the adventure of the day.  When things get tough, if you are racing for fun, things get much easier and success can have a wider definition.
